The story begins while attempting to pack a 6′ X 12′ Uhaul trailer hitched to a 15 passenger van. With our family (8 girls and 2 boys) this was no small undertaking. We were attempting quite an adventure. Traveling from Kansas City to Coeur d’Alene Idaho with 10 children packed in our Chevy express van was, to say the very least, an adventure. We were on our way for a week long vacation in a beautiful vacation rental home to attend a family friend’s wedding.

After all cargo and children were loaded we hit the open road even though Dad was worried about the Uhaul trailer tires (suppose to be new). Bad trailer tires cost us a lot of time through the Montana mountains not to mention stress for Dad in the mountain wind. According to Mapquest this trip should take 24 to 25 hours. However, when you have 10 children and bad trailer tires try 36 hours…..yes, no joke 36 hours. Dear old Dad made the insane (just a little male pride involved) decision to drive straight through. Will not do that again.
Just watching the expressions on people’s faces as 10 kids unload out of our big blue van was quite entertaining. During the trip (with frequent stops along the way as you can imagine) one of the funniest events was to watch all 10 children unload and head into McDonald’s or a rest stop just to use the restroom. Mom was insistent that the little kid’s potty chair was to be carried into the restroom to avoid little bottoms coming in contact with a potential STD. My older kid’s could not have been more embarrassed. Arguments ensued as to who would carry the potty chair the next time. My older kids have since sworn they will never be seen with any potty chair again on future trips.
After finally arriving in Coeur d’Alene Idaho we gladly met our family friend’s and started unpacking the van. It took 2 days for Dad to recover from the 36 hour road marathon and for him to not be the family grump. While in Coeur d’Alene we enjoyed the famous Hudson’s Hamburgers. They are famous for a reason. The kids also enjoyed swimming in Coeur d’Alene lake and playing in the park.
About 3 days into our vacation a little dog just happened to show up at our vacation rental home. I thought to myself: This means trouble. So, of course, we fed the little fella. The kids were becoming attached to little “Pip” (pictured above) as he became affectionately called. We went around the neighborhood trying to find Pip’s owner, made a trip to a local vet to see if Pip had a chip that would reveal his owner’s identity, and called the local Animal Control to see if someone was looking for Pip. All of this turned up nothing. After finding out that there was only a 3 to 5 day kill law in Coeur d’Alene there was no way we could leave Pip knowing that. So, you know what happened next. Pip was part of the family now. Of course, the kid’s reminded me that we could just put a pet fence collar on Pip and it would all work out great back home.
I warned the kid’s that if the owner called and identified the dog on our way back home that we would not be able to keep Pip the dog. All the while Dad is still thinking to himself….do we really need 3 dogs along with 10 kids?

We left for Kansas City with Pip on board. The kids were all giddy and excited. All was well for about 500 miles. Then came the infamous phone call from Pip’s owner who distinctly identified the dog. Fortunately, Pip’s owner actually had a sister who lived 40 miles from Billings Montana which is where we were. So, we pulled into a parking lot and let the kids tearfully play with Pip (real name was Banjo) for about 45 minutes and then they waved tearfully goodbye. Needless to say it was a sad ride home for the little ones. Honestly, Dad was not overly upset about this turn of events because 2 dogs are enough with 10 kids but the story does not end here.
Arriving back home life is returning to routine and I am hearing from my little ones that they are praying for a new puppy. I knew I was toast and might as well give up. Sure enough I go visit my Aunt and what does she mention? She has 2 little yorkie pups that are only 9 weeks old (not one but two). I think to myself: I really do not want to hear that but my conscience got the better of me. So in another week or so the little Yorkies Buster and Teddy (which are pictured here with our girls) arrived.
Now with 4 dogs and 10 kids life is even busier. Summer vacation turned out to be quite the adventure. Buster and Teddy are now safely contained with our Pet Stop pet fence system along with Sugar and Balto. And Dad is still trying to figure out how to housebreak Buster and Teddy.
